Exegesis on jeremiah 31 23 40

Is Ephraim my dear son? There are many Old Testament passages which speak of this "rebuilt" Jerusalem, revealing many differences between the old Jerusalem and the New Jerusalem that cometh down out of heaven from God. As Keil stated it, "That the whole of Israel cannot perish is no bolster for the sin of a single individual.

Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised--In the first clause the chastisement itself is meant; in the second the beneficial effect of it in teaching the penitent true wisdom. Thus saith Jehovah, Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work shall be rewarded, saith Jehovah; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

God here addressed her as "Virgin of Israel"; but that envisions her status at the time after she receives and obeys the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jehovah of old appeared unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: In this case, then, the "coastlands" and "nations" of verse 10 are the subjects and referents of the plurals in verse The clause, "They were not," that is, were dead Genesis Another gross error is the notion that the New Covenant was stated in the form of a question by Feinberg, "Does the New Covenant efface the distinction between Israel racial Israel and the Church the New Israel?

Agricultural and pastoral metaphors are used here, as so frequently in the prophecies of the messianic era, to symbolize the spiritual bounty of the church of the new testament.

Lord-- See Jeremiah Notice those tremendous "ifs" in Deuteronomy Ramah was the place where Nebuzara-dan collected all the Jews in chains, previous to their removal to Babylon Jeremiah Thus we see the absolute identity of the New Israel composed of all Christians from every tribe, race and nation with the old, in this manner achieving the perpetuity of Israel as promised in this chapter.

To say that such people will "languish" no more assume the continual presence of the Lord in the midst of His people always empowering them, through His means of grace, to accomplish all which He would have them do, including the evangelization of the world.

The "weary, sorrowful," and indigent state of Israel will prove no obstacle in the way of My helping them. The proposition that we encounter in most of the current commentaries is that God Himself could hardly wait to marry the scandalous old Whore Israel; and that God actually calls her "The Virgin Israel" in Jeremiah As Green said, "The sulking cynical captives would be skeptical; and therefore the announcement of it gets a heavy stamp of divine authority: For such is clearly the scope of the term in the first verse of the oracle before us, which urges firstly the proclamation of the messianic gospel to the Jews and then its proclamation, through the Jews, to the Gentiles.

In a word, we agree with Matthew Henry who followed the patristic interpretation of this passage and referred it to "The Incarnation of Christ. In the first verse of the oracle before us the Messiah has assumed the title of the Head of the Nations, so as to indicate precisely the addition, so central to the verses now before us, of Gentiles to the original Jews in the church of the new testament.

An earnest of this is given partially in the present eclectic or elect Church gathered out of Jews and Gentiles. See a full discussion of this in my commentary Vol.

Again will I build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: We have already noted that the "priesthood" was changed when Christ our High Priest was raised from the dead, eternally supplanting the Aaronic priesthood; and the author of Hebrews stated that, "The priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law" Hebrews 7: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, in a straight way wherein they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be no male and female; for ye are all one man in Christ Jesus.

The men and women danced in separate rows or circles or whatever without ever touching any members of the opposite sex.

In the New Covenant all special considerations and privileges of racial Israel were forever lost. In the Psalter itself examples can be found in Psalms 5, 20, 33, 51, 59, 63, 67, 71, 84, 89, 90, 92, 95, 96, 98 twicetwice, and ; while 1 Chronicles I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. The most natural identification of the subjects of these verbs and the referents of the related suffix is, in the absence of any contrary evidence, the preceding plural noun.

Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: Some nineteen times in the forty verses of this chapter this formula appears.

Both the scattering of men from the presence of God and the gathering of men back to Him are the work of God Himself, the one flowing from His uncompromising holiness and the second from His unfathomable mercy. Under the old covenant a child was a Jew as soon as he was born and had to be taught this fact after he was old enough to understand.

They shall come with weeping; and with supplications will I lead them: The designation of the Israel intended in these verses as "the Virgin Israel" makes it absolutely certain that it is the Israel which constitutes the Messianic kingdom which is meant. Some see this as a reference to the deliverance from Egypt, and others suppose that it refers to the Israelites left after the destruction by Babylon.

Because, "It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sin" Hebrews Caravans set up pillars, or pointed heaps of stones, to mark the way through the desert against their return.
